KNRTU: Reboot or Total Distant

14.04.2020

The doors of the University buildings are closed, and the corridors and offices are silent. Is it a day off or a vacation? Well, it's coronavirus. KNRTU has been operating in self-isolation mode for a month now. Only representatives of the officials and key staff of the University are in theirworkplaces. All academic activities are now held online, in the remote format.

Now, when politicians and doctors are fighting a new dangerous and insidious enemy – COVID-19, faculty and management of Russian Universities face a demanding challenge: to prevent the disruption of curricula, quickly and effectively establish the remote learning format.

The journalists of KNRTU deliver the material bout how one of the leading Universities of Tatarstan copes with this challenge in a situation that can be safely called absolutely unprecedented.

Part 1. There was no hesitation There was nohesitation: teachers and students turned to the possibilities of those resources that were best known to them and proved to be the most convenient and accessible. Most of the teachers took advantage of the opportunities of the "Electronic University" system deployed at KNRTU: each student and teacher has a separate personal account in the system and the ability to communicate with each other, send files and links to Internet resources. Some found it convenient to communicate via e-mail and WhatsApp. At the Department of Chemical Technology of Oil and Gas Engineering, distance learning was organized using Google educational software packages. Students of the Kazan Technological College, which is part of KNRTU, continued their studies online using their favorite social media services — Instagram and Vkontakte:video lectures and live broadcasts are organized for themthere.

However, most often different types of resources were used simultaneously. For example, Head Teacher of the Department of Design - Milyausha Khaliullina combined work in her personal account and Vkontakte, while her colleague, Docent - Svetlana Murtazina, posted lectures and presentations in her personal account, and conducted seminars and exams in the Zoom system.

Part 2. Launching on YouTube KNRTU was preparing to launch a large-scale project of open lectures. Two trial online classes were held on March 20, and from the beginning of the next week, broadcasts on the YouTube video hosting have been taking place permanently. Before the start of the unscheduled vacation on March 28, about a hundred lectures on various fields of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, Pharmacology, Mathematics and Mechanics, Computer Science, Social Sciences and Humanities were broadcast from several studios deployed in University classrooms.

On April 6, the work returned to its previous intensive mode, only now teachers have to go live directly from home. Many teachers have organized real classrooms in their apartments. For example, Head Teacher of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Material Resistance - Artur Kurbangaleev installed a real chalk board. Docent of the Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics - Inis Salimyanov got a whiteboard, and Docent of the Department of Higher Mathematics - Andrey Mikheev explained the topic of improper integrals to students on an interactive whiteboard.

On April 8, Alexey Burmistrov - Vice-rector for Academic Affairs, Professor of the Department of Vacuum Engineering of Electrophysical Installations, started giving online lectures. The Deans do not stand aside:Elmira Khairullina (Faculty of Design and Software Engineering), Oleg Stoyanov (Faculty of Technology, Processing and Certification of Plastics and Composites), Hasya Yaroshevskaya (Faculty of Technology and Processing of Rubbers and Elastomers), Dilbar Sultanova (Faculty of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers in Medicine and Cosmetics), Andrey Tuzikov (Faculty of Industrial Policy and Business Administration).

Part 3. Moodle – faithful helper The Moodle distance learning system, which is actively used at the University, also helped teachers a lot. Now on the basis of this popular educational environment, KNRTU has already implemented 2,500 courses, and by the end of the semester, about a thousand more will be added to them.

Now mathematicians, chemists, and scholars of KNRTU give real-time online lectures and video conferencesin Moodle in accordance with the schedule of the educational process. Part of the lectures and practical classes are published in the public domain.

By the way, since 2015, Center for open (distance) education, founded on the basis of the Institute of Additional Professional Education at KNRTU, has been providing advanced training and occupational retraining to employees of «Gazprom»Enterprises using the Moodle platform.

Part 4. Students thumbs up Teachers point to the interest and active participation of students. Many of whom perceived the transition to distance learning not as a sudden problem, but as a challenge.

Most staff and student are sure that remote format will not lead to a serious decrease in the level of acquiring knowledge. On the contrary, the possibilities of distance learning systems help students distribute the preparation time more independently, and professors are now able to reach each student.

Extracurricular activities are now also held remotely. For example, the Faculty of Social Engineering Systems has a club for interested students, where they develop projects, meet with practitioners, and conduct games. "Now we are trying an online mode and for now we are running online quiz" - says Docent of the Department of Logistics and Management - Irina Zaichenko.

Student life, even in conditions of self-isolation, is not only a study, but also an opportunity for self-realization. Here, as always, the student asset is ahead: "In social networks, we have launched a video contest with hashtag #ФННХсидитдома(FPPCStaysHome) with prizes for the best video from the heads of the petrochemical complex enterprises and our Faculty, we write a regular column #нашивыпускники, we also actively maintain contacts in the Network, and encourage students not to miss the opportunities that have opened up to us now," says the Head of the Media Center of the Faculty of Oil and Petrochemistry, student Maria Ivanova.

Part 5.It’s not all that simple “Distance learning in such a massive format takes only the first steps. We have to spend much more time and effort. It is not always possible to provide students with computer equipment and high-speed communication” - said the Dean of the Faculty of Energy-saturated Materials and Products - Vladimir Petrov.

“Of course, this is a stress for all structures: the load on preparing and conducting classes with the transition to distance has increased significantly” - says Gleb Vasiliev, Head Teacher of the Department of State, Municipal Management and Sociology. “Distance learning also has a lot of requirementsto students: they need high motivation, the ability to learn independently, plan workload and perform tasks without obvious control” - says the Head of the Department of Design - Venera Khammatova.

“Distance learning is good, but it is necessary that all issues related to its implementation are regulated, including issues related to the procedure for passing exams and complete missed assignments” — said Sergey Sidorin. By the way, KNRTU already has examples of passing exams via video conferences. Recently, students of the Department of Design passed an exam on the Design of Ceramic Products: they picked tickets and answered them via video conference. Ahead is the defense of creative graduation projects and preparation for state exams.

The main drawback of distance learning in Engineering Universitiesis the inability to perform laboratory and practical work in this mode. "It is obvious that the study of chemical and other natural science disciplines completely in virtual form will not allow you to prepare a qualified chemical engineer-technologist" – says Stanislav Borisevich.

Part 6. Will distance learning stop? No matter how long the days of self-isolation drag on, the coronavirus will eventually be defeated. Voices will be heard again in classrooms and laboratories, and University life will be restored.

Almost all the teachers are unanimous: the methods of working online that are currently used at KNRTU will be applied in the future, when the University returns to normal classes.

The University authorities will undoubtedly implement distance education more decisively. This will improve the working efficiency with students, use the best educational practices of leading Universities in Russia and around the world, and share their best practices. Scientific conferences and meetings of departments are already being held online, in the near future, perhaps dissertations will also be organized in that form.

But still — in any case, when we are talking about engineering education in the classical sense - it is impossible to be done by remote technologies alone.

“Relations between students and teachers will also change. The ability of active communication over the Internet will bring them closer together. Working remotely has not only a practical, but also an emotional dimension” - says Lyudmila Safina.
